President's Pen

Submitted by: Brian Cox, PHR, President HRACI

I am extremely proud to share the following with the entire Chapter:

--For Immediate Release—

Human Resource Association of Central Indiana (HRACI) is now IndySHRM

Indianapolis, IN (July 21, 2009) -- As a result of a chapter-wide vote, the Human Resource Association of Central Indiana (HRACI) is now called IndySHRM. SHRM is an acronym for Society for Human Resource Management. The local chapter’s updated brand and chapter name provides closer alignment with the parent association brand. SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management, representing more than 250,000 members in over 140 countries; the Society serves the needs of HR professionals and advances the interests of the HR profession. Founded in 1948, SHRM has more than 575 affiliated chapters within the U.S. and subsidiary offices in China and India.

The local chapter – now IndySHRM, was founded in 1974 and has been recognized as the voice of human resources in the central Indiana community for 35 years. Throughout a six-month period, local and national focus groups established the moniker ‘Indy’ was widely recognized as the central location in Indiana and SHRM was immediately recognized as a local chapter of the national organization. Thus, the name IndySHRM along with the tagline ‘Advancing Human Resources in Central Indiana’ was born.

IndySHRM’s value proposition consists of five key deliverables to help further the association’s mission of engaging human resource professionals by providing comprehensive and up-to-date resources and opportunities to build professional relationships that will enhance their effectiveness as HR leaders in central Indiana:

  • Community Responsibility
  • Professional Development
  • Education
  • Student Development
  • Networking

Through the continued implementation of its strategic plan, IndySHRM’s goal is to offer the best in human resource content and services and to support the awareness of HR issues to business professionals throughout central Indiana. For more information on IndySHRM, please visit www.indyshrm.org.

Certification Update

Submitted by: Jennifer Lange, PHR

Nine Great Reasons to Become PHR/SPHR/GPHR Certified

Reason #9 – Professional enhancement. If you do one thing to hone your HR skills each year you will certainly become a more effective and credible professional. Let this be your “one thing” this year. Already have your PHR? Go for your SPHR or GPHR.

Reason #8 – Your earned certification designation is the “badge” of your profession. It says you’re a capable HR professional.

Reason #7 – You’ll receive HRCI and SHRM support every step of the way as you prepare for the exam.

Reason #6 – You can capitalize on your certification achieved and use the experience to be a role model for others in your organization and in our IndySHRM chapter.

Reason #5 – In these uncertain economic times, should you find yourself in a job search, certification can increase the possibility of finding a truly desirable position.

Reason #4 – Studying for the exam will bring you current in the HR profession, and recertifying every three years will keep you current.

Reason #3 – Computer-based testing! You will know your test results immediately – no waiting for a letter in the mail!

Reason #2 – You enhance your ability to become a strategic business partner with your organization’s top management.

Reason #1 – It hurts so good! Passing the exam makes the time spent in preparation well worth the effort!
