It
is with great pride and honor that I become the next
President of our fine association. I follow a line of
passionate leaders, for whom many, I have served as director
of committees and most recently as President-Elect. Through
these experiences, I have watched strong leaders grow
our association from 250 members to today’s strength
of over 1100 members. I have attended Regional, State
and National SHRM meetings and witnessed first-hand the
respect we have gained in Indiana for our quality membership,
programming and member benefits. I am proud to carry
on these traditions while continuing to build on our
solid foundation.
To
that end, get ready for a terrific 2009! Your HRACI
Board has put considerable thought and effort into
our 2009-2010 strategic plan and are anxious to begin
implementing our objectives.
Many of these objectives will be within the operational
areas of budget, membership and programming and will
serve in continuing to pursue additional programming
and networking opportunities. Our objectives will also
focus on attracting more SHRM at-large members, who may
already be SHRM members, but are not currently involved
with HRACI. Two of the more visible areas of development
you will see involve the culmination of research and
surveys, studying our chapter/brand name and our coinciding
website. The goal is to prominently demonstrate our connection
with National SHRM, while bolstering our local services
and usability within the website. We want it to be the
central point where you can obtain links to the HR information
you need as well as continue to provide all the up to
date information on our programming, networking and special
offerings.
Thus,
take a look at your HR association, be proud of our
current standard of excellence--yet please also challenge
yourself and your Board with new ideas and energy. Let
us know what your ideas are and how you would like to
be part of the continued growth of HRACI as we begin
the journey of our 35th year as the resource for HR
Professionals
in Indy!

HRACI is excited to announce a new ticketing program designed
to save members money and time!
Now through the end of April, members can purchase tickets
in bundles of four ($90) or six ($135); when bundled, each
ticket costs $22.50 but has a face value of $25.
Members can use tickets to:
- Attend
HRACI breakfasts and lunches (priced at $25)
- Help
pay for HRACI half-day programs or other events that
cost more than $25. Each ticket pays for $25 toward
the cost of the program or event. (only
1 ticket per registration can be used)
By
purchasing bundled tickets, members save 10 percent on
admission to HRACI programs and events. They also reduce
the amount of time spent writing checks or providing
credit-card information. Payment becomes much easier!
To
purchase bundled tickets visit www.HRACI.org and click
on the “Events” tab.
Please note: All bundled tickets must be used in 2009, and HRACI will
not refund
any unused tickets. Also, bundled tickets cannot be used
to pay for membership dues.

HR Certification Institute Will Tighten
Exam Eligibility
By Beth Mirza
Beginning
in 2011, HR professionals who want to sit for one of
the HR Certification Institute's exams will face stricter
eligibility requirements.
After
conducting focus groups and surveys of more than 14,000
certified and non-certified HR professionals, business
leaders, students
and academicians, the HR Certification Institute will require
applicants to have a combination of education and demonstrated
exempt-level HR experience to sit for exams. Prior to
the May-June 2011 testing window, applicants need to have
only two years of exempt-level HR experience.
Best
practices in the certification industry suggest that
exam eligibility requirements should be reviewed periodically,
say HR Certification Institute leaders. "The eligibility
requirement changes that are being made will ensure alignment
with the needs of HR professionals worldwide," said
Cornelia Springer, CAE, operations director of the HR Certification
Institute. "Elevating
the requirements elevates the value of the credentials."
The
changes affect the Professional in Human Resources (PHR),
the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and
the Global Professional
in Human Resources (GPHR) credentials. To sit for the SPHR
exam, for example, candidates must have seven years of
exempt-level HR experience with less than a bachelor's
degree, five years of exempt-level
HR experience with a bachelor's degree, or four years of
exempt-level HR
experience with a master's degree or higher.
Students
will no longer be eligible to sit for the exams unless
they have the required level of experience. They must
meet the
same requirements as non-students and have the requisite
years of demonstrated experience required for their level
of education.
Some
currently certified HR professionals might not qualify
to sit for the exam in 2011 in order to recertify, and
they are encouraged to recertify through continuing education
credits, Springer
said. To recertify by exam after the eligibility requirements
change, certificants must meet the new requirements.
See www.hrci.org/certification and click "New Eligibility
Requirements for 2011" for more information.

Mirza is senior editor for HR News. She can be reached

If
you haven’t renewed with HRACI, it’s not
too late! Remember, your renewal is only $90* for a
year full of exciting programs and opportunities in
2009. You can renew online using a credit card, bring
a check and renew at January’s meeting or mail
your payment along with the renewal form found at www.hraci.org.
Thank you for your commitment to HRACI!
As a reminder the referral program began in October 2008
and will run through December 2009. We are giving incentives
to HRACI members who refer others who join HRACI. For your
first referral you will immediately receive a $10 Starbucks
card. Referrals will be tracked through December of 2009
and a monetary reward will be given at the end of the year
for your total referrals. The reward increases in value
for each referral you get. Your second referral will be
$15, the third $25, the fourth $35 and the fifth will receive
a $50 gift card. Any referrals beyond 5 will be rewarded
with an additional $5 for each referral. So someone who
refers 5 members to join HRACI could come away with a total
of $125. These will be American Express cards so you can
use them anywhere or even deposit them into your own bank.
We hope everyone will be motivated to share with non-members
the benefits that HRACI offers. And be sure the joining
members note your name as the referrer on their membership
application.

Any
renewals received after January 31, 2009 will be subject
to the late renewal rate of $125

Learn
how to use social recruiting strategies to effectively
connect with talent via your career site, and how to
communicate and form relationships with candidates on
social networking sites. As compared to more traditional
offerings, social recruiting is about communicating,
not advertising. The authentic information that is generated
and shared through social recruiting can powerfully influence
the overall perception of a company and give potential
job candidates a deeper and real understanding of an
organization as an employer.
Learning Objectives:
1.
Increase understanding of the changing expectations of
emerging workforce.
2.
Increase understanding of improving the experience on
corporate career sites to connect with candidates and
build candidate communities.
3.
Understand best practices around how to attract and build
relationships with potential candidates via social networking
sites like Facebook and LinkedIn, as well as blogs.

As we enter the New Year, there are several legislative initiatives receiving
a great deal of attention from human resources professionals. These primarily
include proposed or enacted changes to labor and employment laws at the federal
level. However, one issue that has not received as much attention has come to
the forefront at the state level and requires immediate attention.
Indiana’s
Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund has dipped to dangerously
low levels recently and requires an immediate infusion
of revenue in order to remain solvent. The problem is
only compounded by the increasing number of unemployment
compensation claims received by the Indiana Department
of Workforce Development. The Fund recently borrowed
$145 million from the federal government in order to
keep up with its obligations to pay unemployment claims.
In
order to address this issue, the Governor appointed an
ad hoc committee comprised of employer, labor and governmental
representatives to craft a plan to present to the Indiana
General Assembly. It appears that the committee is reviewing
all possible options, including increasing unemployment
taxes on employers, adjusting benefit levels, and others.
Employers will want to watch this issue closely and work
through their representatives to ensure their voices
are heard. Additionally, employers should place renewed
focus on handling of unemployment claims and related
issues, as overall costs of the program may be on the
rise.
