The
Voice of Human Resources
It’s that time of year
when I sit amongst 6,000 colleagues at SHRM National
in New Orleans and reflect on human resource issues
and skills for the trade. It is within the 90 degree
heat and humidity outside and the chilled conference
rooms inside that it hit me. When we finally take a
moment to sit back and reflect on the impact our profession
has on the companies we support and the communities
in which we live, the true value of human resources
is “our voice”. There is much written on
having a voice and how to use that voice we were given
to speak up, make a difference and create change through
our guidance. It strikes me that our colleagues who
are making the greatest differences in their companies
and communities are using their voice to accomplish
this impact. From coaching employees, management and
executives on business decisions to communicating across
the globe to keep corporate visions and missions alive
and aligned, it is HR who is speaking. Without the
conscience, without the set of eyes and ears looking
at the broad scope of employees and cultures, our business
colleagues would not have all the information needed
to make the decisions and strategies that will truly
work. This is where you come in. If you think it, say
it. If you see the train running off the tracks, call
it out. If you see a way to improve the plan, ensure
you let the entire team know. It is your obligation
as an HR Professional to provide this value.
That said, we have heard your voice regarding the vote
on our proposed new chapter name and logo. I would
like to thank the many people in the Chapter
who have called for this change, participated in the
focus groups and shared their opinions during our luncheons
and via e-mail with regard to these ideas. After many
months of evaluation, consultation and idea generation,
we are ready to move ahead.
Please take the time to have your voice heard through
your vote. The goals of the branding update include:
-
Strengthen
the link between our Local and National brands
by incorporating SHRM into our name
-
Broaden
the outside awareness of our location by using
the well-known reference of Indy,
while acknowledging
our central Indiana service area by adding
the tagline “Serving
the HR Profession in Central Indiana”
-
Consolidate
and promote our value proposition via the colors
and meanings within
our logo
-
Update
our website to provide the content and social media
connections
for our members
Please
join me in the continued evolution of our Chapter,
the votes are in and we are changing! |

The votes are in and the HRACI membership has voted on a
new name and a new brand!
So where do we go from here?
Thank you to our membership, our Board and my committee
for all of the hard work that has gone into this process
thus
far. Hang on to your hats, because we have only just begun!
Over the next 3 months, you will see us transitioning the
following:
-
Distribution
of our message to media and social outlets announcing
our new name
-
Updated
website with new name and new look
-
Updated
collateral and materials to reflect our new name
and brand
You
will see our Board members proudly displaying our new
logo at the State
Conference in August.
Stay tuned
and watch
and listen as we proceed with our transition! |

AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
Have you recently joined HRACI and wonder how you can get
the most out of your membership? Then you need to get
connected with an Ambassador. The Ambassador is someone
who has been a member of HRACI at least 6 months and
is available to answer any questions you may have and
to make you feel welcome in the organization. Your Ambassador
will also go over your new member packet and will meet
with you as frequently as you would like. If you haven’t
been contacted by an Ambassador, you can email sue_bard@us.aflac.com and she will get you connected with someone.
REFERRAL PROGRAM
Congratulations to those who referred new members in May
and June! In May, Pam Dolas and Lisa Helms both referred
one member and Caryn Sarvich referred 3 members. In June,
Pam Dolas, Caryn Sarvich and Angela Woods each referred
one member.
Earn a $5 Starbucks gift card for your first referral,
with subsequent referrals tracked throughout the rest of
the year for a monetary reward in December. Keep spreading
the word about the benefits of HRACI!

Update |

SMA hosted their first networking event of the year on
June 23rd at Easley Winery in downtown Indianapolis.
Sixty-plus HR professionals came together, including
a few new potential HRACI members, to enjoy a bit of
culture and the opportunity to network.
Deseri Garcia, Rainmakers President, shared her story
and offered tips on how to network effectively and reminded
us all of the true essence of networking – discovering
how you can help someone else! She also challenged each
attendee to meet 3 new people and follow up with them after
the event.
Attendees enjoyed a winery tour, complimentary wine tasting
of 7 wines, light snacks and music by local musicians in
the winery garden. As with every SMA Program Event, there
were many door prizes given away. In support of the HRACI
membership drive, members who brought a non-HRACI member
guest were also put into a special drawing for an aerial
photo of Lucas Oil Stadium and downtown Indianapolis, which
will be presented to one lucky winner in December.
Thanks to our sponsors, Today’s Staffing
and SCHEETZ Relocation, the event was free to all HRACI
members!
SMA is gearing up for their next program, Workforce Engagement,
which will be hosted by Comedy Sports. Check the HRACI
website for more details to come!

Multicultural
Advantage writes on “How
to Accelerate Diversity Recruitment”
The Multicultural Advantage organization recently posted
the article “How To Accelerate Diversity Recruitment” on
multiculturaladvantage.com, the organization suggests some
great tips in focusing on diversity recruitment.
Try these
suggestions:
- Attract
multicultural interns by building formal relationships
with schools with diverse student populations.
- Cultivate
partnerships with organizations that cater to diverse
populations such as women, minorities,
seniors and individuals with disabilities
- Use
a culturally diverse interview panel to minimize like-hires-like
bias.
- Explore
nontraditional networking channels such as Facebook
and LinkedIn. Look for groups that attract
members of minority populations.
- Create
a strong referral program to encourage your diverse
employees to aid in recruiting efforts.

Thinking About Taking the PHR or SPHR Certification
Exam in December 2009/January 2010?
The 2009 Fall HRACI PHR/SPHR study groups will start mid-September.
Classes will meet one (1) night a week in the evening from
6:00 pm to 8:30 p.m. for nine (9) weeks. We HOPE to have
two (2) locations (depending on interest) -- northside
and downtown.
In
late July/early August, HRACI we will begin accepting
online registrations for the HRACI study
group(s) and each
session/location will be limited to 25 participants. However,
if you know that you’re interested -- send an email
to Jennifer Lange (jennifer.lange@oldnational.com) and
she’ll be sure to contact you when the registration
link on HRACI’s website is live to ensure that you
don’t miss it!
Again this Fall we are going to be using the HRCP study
materials (this is NOT the same as SHRM Learning System)
which includes six (6) study booklets covering each section
of the exam, review questions and answers for each unit,
and over 500 flashcards. To learn more about the HRCP materials,
you can go to www.HRCP.com.
The cost for the program will be around $400 for HRACI
members and $600 for non-members (specifics still TBD).
If you have questions or would like more information
please contact Jennifer Lange, PHR at 317-693-2757 or

HRACI
July Monthly Meeting |
Sustainable
Leadership for a Global Business Environment
Leadership
in organizations are undergoing tremendous shifts today – economic,
environmental, philosophical, social, cultural and spiritual
that render past practices and approaches to business
ineffective. It is imperative the HR professional lead
the way strategically with holistic and integrated approaches
to these complex issues. Finding new ways to think, communicate
and lead helps create more effective and sustainable
business practices for their companies.
Sustainable
Leadership encompasses the values and skills associated
with trust, integrity, social responsibility, flexibly,
smart growth, creativity and life-long learning. The
development of a sustainable leader is a process – not
an event – and an intentional investment in self
through talent, self-awareness, reflection, persistence
and rigor. The development of sustainable leadership
skills and practices enable; 1) leaders to develop wise,
long-term solutions to complex problems; 2) Generate
conversations to increase productivity, customer satisfaction
and employee well-being; 3) Clarify and strengthen team
and individual interactions, leading to increased efficiency
and productivity and 5) Establish organizational frameworks
where building and maintaining trust are the norm.
This
program has been approved for recertification credit hours toward
PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification
Institute (HRCI). The use of this seal is not an endorsement
by the HR Certification Institute of the quality of the program.
It means that this program has met the HR Certification Institute’s
criteria to be pre-approved for recertification credit. For more
information about certification or recertification, please visit
