President's Pen

Submitted by: Brian Cox, PHR, President IndySHRM

It's October and for IndySHRM that means annual elections for half of your Chapter's Board seats. We have two-year terms and half of the Board is elected/re-elected (if eligible and interested) each year. This sustains continuity by not having an entirely new Board after each election.

This year the nomination review committee received a record number of qualified candidates for the available roles. After considerable conversation and review, the following slate of candidates was presented and voted on by the Board and then submitted electronically to the entire Chapter for the final vote. With all the votes in, I am pleased to announce this year's results. The following members have accepted Director positions for the 2010-2011 IndySHRM Board:

IndySHRM Bundled Ticketing Program for 2010

Submitted by: Jeremy York

IndySHRM is excited to announce once again its bundled ticketing program—designed to save our members money and time!

Now through the end of April 2010, members can purchase tickets in bundles of four ($90) or six ($135); when bundled, each ticket costs $22.50 but has a face value of $25.

Members can use tickets to:

  • Attend 2010 IndySHRM breakfasts and lunches (priced at $25)
  • Help pay for 2010 IndySHRM half-day programs or other events that cost more than $25. Each ticket pays for $25 toward the cost of the program or event.

By purchasing bundled tickets, members save 10 percent on admission to IndySHRM programs and events. They also reduce the amount of time they spend writing checks or providing credit-card information. Payment becomes much easier!

To purchase 2010 bundled tickets visit www.IndySHRM.org and click on the “Events” tab.

Please note: All 2010 bundled tickets must be used in 2010, and IndySHRM will not refund any unused tickets. Also, bundled tickets cannot be used to pay for membership dues.

Membership Update

Membership Renewals

It’s that time of the year when we all scramble to get our membership dues approved and sent in to IndySHRM. As in past years, we will be doing a drawing for those who renew by December 15th. The drawing will be for either a free meeting (1/2 day meetings excluded) or a $25 gift card. We will draw three names at the January meeting. You do not have to be present to win. Visit the website, www.IndySHRM.org, and the home page has a link to renew your dues online. You can also print the renewal form to mail in with a check. Thank you for being a part of IndySHRM and we look forward to another great year in 2010!

Referrals
Our referral program is going strong as we continue to have IndySHRM members referring new members to the association. For your first referral you will be immediately rewarded with a $5 Starbucks card. Referrals will continue to be tracked until the end of the year with the total number of referrals rewarded in a Visa or Mastercard so you can use them anywhere. Your first referral will be $10, the second $15, the third $25, the fourth $30 and the fifth $50. Referring 5 members could net you a total of $130! We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity and share your IndySHRM experiences with non-members. In October, Mark Bender and JoDee Curtis both referred one member. Great job!

IndySHRM Member Testimonials
The following testimonials provide insight into the benefits of an IndySHRM membership.

Jolene Annes is a new member of IndySHRM and works as a HR Manager at the Omni Severin Hotel. She is working on attaining her PHR and is part of the PHR certification class that IndySHRM offers. She thinks the association does a great job of communicating industry issues and news and offering valuable programs that help HR professionals add value to their organizations. Jolene indicates a key factor for a successful membership is staying active in the association and she plans to attend more events and even volunteer on a committee. She is looking forward to the educational and networking opportunities that IndySHRM offers all of its members.

Angie Perry works as an Account Manager for Ajilon Professional Staffing and has been a member of IndySHRM since 2008. She joined for the opportunity to network with a group of influential professionals and to truly learn what is important to them in the HR field. She believes a key factor for a successful membership is by far attendance, not only at monthly luncheons but at network sessions or other workshops. Her most unique experience at IndySHRM has been speaking to HR Managers who have lost their jobs. When hearing this, she always asks if they are a member of IndySHRM and if not, she tells them all it has to offer including job knowledge as well as networking for job opportunities. Angie says being a part of IndySHRM has been an overall informative and exciting opportunity. It gives her a chance to increase her knowledge of the daily struggles and wins of HR.

SMA Update

Submitted by: Susan Van Hoosen, Committee Chair

Sure, it’s a year many of us would prefer to forget – higher unemployment, lower compensation, a weak job market, “Balloon Boy…” One bright aspect to 2009: the great programs of your Central Indiana Staffing Management Association (SMA).

A special interest group of IndySHRM, SMA – Central Indiana serves the needs of professionals focused in recruiting and retention by providing continuing education, developmental programs, and networking opportunities. We work hard to make sure that every program or event is timely, educational, and interesting. We want participants to leave each session with new ideas to put into practice to benefit their firms and themselves. SMA membership is a free benefit of your IndySHRM membership.

In January, we hosted an IndySHRM luncheon - a follow-up presentation on the use of online social networking for recruiting candidates, for professional networking, and for finding new jobs.
In April, SMA gathered a panel of experts to talk about the effects the economy was having on staffing and recruiting, and to discuss ways professionals could improve their networking skills, find new solutions to staffing challenges, and demonstrate to peers and supervisors their value within their companies.

By June, we knew it was time for a little merriment, so we held a networking event at Easley Winery. Yes, there was great food and drink, a fun tour, and lots of giveaways, but there was education, too, with another session on effective networking. (Are you sensing a theme?)
In September, our attention turned to workforce, employee, and personal engagement. Attendees learned tips to improve practices within our organizations to attract, retain, and motivate talent, as well as to find jobs and companies that are the right “fit” for us. Teams from ComedySportz even showed us how to infuse a little humor into HR.

2010 will be another great year for SMA events. Watch for more details in next month’s newsletter and on the SMA page of IndySHRM.org.

Education Update

Report on the 2009 SHRM Diversity Conference and Exposition
San Diego, CA
Attended by: Hortense White, Diversity Committee

Thank you to IndySHRM for the opportunity to attend the 2009 SHRM Diversity Conference & Exposition.

I had a wonderful time. The networking opportunity alone was well worth the trip. There were several common themes that resonated throughout the conference, including: Engage the Four Generations (i.e., traditionalist, Baby Boomers, GenX, and GenY), The Power of Inclusion, and Ensure your Diversity Plan is Aligned with Your Business Initiatives.

The opening speaker for the general session, Kevin Carroll, had an awesome story to tell surrounding his book “The Red Rubber Ball at Work.” Dr. Samuel Betances closed the conference at the final general session. Wow, what a speaker! His delivery was humor-filled, with a powerful message. He talked about adding value to willing learners who embrace the challenge of making heads count instead of counting heads in the workplace. The most powerful session I attended was “Race + Gender: Multicultural Women in Corporate Environment.” The presenter, Jessica Faye Carter, was able to provide some practical tips in addressing day to day issues multicultural women face that are often left unsaid.

I would recommend any of the above speakers, in particular Kevin Carroll and Jessica Faye Carter. Dr. Betances was my favorite speaker (very entertaining with a powerful message) and literally had the audience engaged and bent over with laughter.

Thanks again for the opportunity to serve IndySHRM and represent the Diversity Committee.

Volunteer Management Update

Submitted by: Shawna Lake, SPHR

Each committee and special interest group has spent time this fall on the 2010 strategic plan for the organization. In doing so, several opportunities have been identified for new and additional volunteers. Please join us on Thursday, November 19th for a special addition to the monthly meeting. We’ll have a volunteer fair 11:00-11:30 where you can speak with current volunteers from each committee and begin thinking about what role you’d like to play with IndySHRM in 2010. Volunteer opportunities are listed on the website and change often, so check those out from time to time. Finally, you can always email volunteeropps@IndySHRM.org to get involved.

This organization relies on its strong volunteer base for all programs and initiatives. Volunteers repeatedly tell us how they personally benefit from their volunteer experiences with IndySHRM, from networking and leadership training to professional development and recertification. What do you want to get out of volunteering? How can you give back in the coming year? Join us on November 19th or, better yet, don’t wait! Contact the Volunteer Management committee today!

Beyond Facebook – Legal Issues in Marketing Your Company

The popularity of social media has led to a whole new area of legal risks. Do you know your organization’s legal risks when it comes to using social media? In this program, Hannah Kaufman Joseph will help participants gain an understanding of the different types of marketing and promotions that can be used online and the associated legal risks, including a basic explanation of intellectual property principles, requirements of sweepstakes and contests and guidelines for using social media.

  • The difference between trademarks and copyrights and the rules for using protected intellectual property in online marketing
  • The basic rules for sweepstakes and contests
  • Explanation of the fine print for a promotional offer
  • The risks and rewards of using social media
  • When to use terms of use and privacy statements

Hannah Kaufman Joseph is an attorney at Hollingsworth & Zivitz, PC where focuses her practice on business law and entrepreneurial services. Hannah is an Indiana business attorney who provides common sense guidance on complex issues including business entity selection and formation, commercial and real estate transactions, strategic planning, drafting and negotiation of contracts and leases, trademark, copyright, and licensing, and business disputes. Hannah is one of the only attorneys in Indiana to offer experienced legal guidance on promotional law, including advertising, sweepstakes, contests, consumer privacy, and e-commerce related issues.

Prior to joining Hollingsworth & Zivitz, Hannah worked as corporate counsel to The Finish Line, Inc. As Finish Line corporate counsel, Hannah gained a unique understanding of balancing the business needs of a for-profit enterprise against the legal risks that face every company. Hannah and her husband have also started their own business, King David Dogs, an Indianapolis restaurant that has already opened two locations in less than three years. These combined experiences have given Hannah a unique perspective into the legal needs of a small business owner. Hannah is an entrepreneur, and can therefore provide thoughtful, cost-effective guidance to individuals hoping to start-up a for-profit enterprise or facing business-related legal issues.

Additionally, Hannah has handled matters including securities fraud, compliance with state and federal securities registration requirements, private placement issues, commercial contract disputes, business litigation, and employment issues.

Aside from the practice of law, Hannah is an animal lover, an avid reader, a free-lance writer, and an ardent Colts fan. She enjoys spending time with her husband, twin sons and two dogs.

"HR Earning A Seat At The Leadership Table”

Many HR Leaders of small to mid-sized companies (defined as 50 to 5,000 EE’s) just assume that HR can never get out of the tactical day to day administrative duties and become a strategic partner in the business. Streamlining efficiencies (one of the essential keys to getting in front of the business) is often discussed but rarely implemented. Too often these same leaders and companies assume that only larger corporations can afford solutions, and dedicate the time to do so. HR is the only department that sees, touches, and permeates all parts of the organization regardless of organization size. As HR Leaders you can’t afford not to be at the Leadership Table!

Interactive discussion on how HR Leaders and Administrators can improve their ability to get out if front of the business, become a strategic partner in the business and earn and maintain a seat at the Leadership Table.

Learning Objectives:

1. Assess HR’s position within the company.
2. Identify barriers/obstacles preventing HR Leadership from becoming a strategic partner.
3. Discuss solutions to get out of the tactical day today.
4. Become a pro-active leader rather than a re-active doer.

About the Speaker:
Joe Barrett is the vice president of sales for Achievant. He has 17 years of sales and leadership experience at Eli Lilly and Abbott. Joe brings to Achievant experience in multiple aspects of human performance including change management, performance management, sales and leadership training, recruiting, operations and human resource management. Serving in leadership and training positions for two Fortune 100 companies has allowed Joe to identify the critical aspects necessary for managers and organizations to create clear vision, establish key milestones and processes for assessing individual and team performance, organizational effectiveness and how to coach others to do the same.

Joe graduated from Marian College with a bachelor of science in business administration with a concentration in marketing. Additional certifications and memberships include: insights, evaluation & measurement, critical thinking, targeted selection, emotional intelligence, and membership in the Society of Pharmaceutical and Bio Tech Trainers.
