HRACI
October Meeting
|
This
meeting will take place during the Indiana
Chamber of Commerce Workplace Harassment Seminar
Beast
Management - Uncommon Conflict Resolution with Tough
Critters
This
session will provide unique, non-traditional and highly
effective methods for managing conflict with the most
insufferable and obstreperous people in the workplace,
particularly after reasonable approaches have failed.
HR professionals recognize that mediation, negotiation and other “let’s
be reasonable” approaches to workplace conflict often fails with intimidating,
manipulative or mean-spirited people (i.e., “beasts”). Dealing
with these “tough critters” requires innovative, high-impact tactics
that neutralize the psychological power wielded by vexatious people.
Participants
will learn:
- Critical
leverage points with tough critters.
- The "finesse" approach
to conflict.
- Psychological
Aikido.
- Mentally
disarming adversaries.
- Managing
specific types of "beasts".
About
the Speaker:

on ABC Television's 20/20. Over the previous 3
years, he has been rated among the top 10 speakers at the
National SHRM conference. He holds a master's degree in
counseling psychology and taught behavioral sciences at

Committee Update |
Submitted
by
Angie Ritz, PHR
HRACI has some exciting initiatives
in the works for the rest of 2008 into 2009. This
month starts
our renewal drive for 2009. Remember, your renewal
is only $90 for a year full of exciting programs
and opportunities in 2009. We will have one drawing
at the December 11th annual holiday program for those
who have renewed through December 8th. Two additional
drawings will be held at the January program for
those who renew by December 31st. The prizes will
be one free luncheon meeting – a $25 value
(1/2 day programs excluded), an HRACI shirt and a
$25 gas card. Be sure to get your renewal in before
the end of the year to qualify for these drawings!
Along with renewals, beginning in October 2008, we
will be giving incentives to HRACI members who refer
others who join HRACI. For your first referral you
will immediately receive a $5 Starbucks card. Referrals
will be tracked through December of 2009 and a monetary
reward will be given at the end of the year for your
total referrals. The reward increases in value for
each referral you get. Your first referral will be
$10, the second $15, the third $25, the fourth $30
and the fifth will receive a $50 gift card. Any
referrals beyond 5 will be rewarded with an additional
$5 for
each referral. So someone who refers 5 members to
join HRACI could come away with a total of $130. These will be American Express cards so you can use
them anywhere or even deposit them into your own
bank. We hope everyone will be motivated to share
with non-members the benefits that HRACI offers.
And be sure the joining members note your name as
the referrer on their membership application.
How long have you been a member of HRACI? We value
your commitment to this organization and would like
to recognize those individuals who have been members
of HRACI for 5 years or more. Watch for more details
in the coming months.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness
Month |
Submitted
by Erin Brothers
Appropriately, I will be attending the SHRM Workplace Diversity
Conference in Atlanta, GA at the end of this month for an
excellent learning and networking opportunity with other
diversity professionals from around the country.
According to the U.S.
Census Bureau, 51.2 million people—18
percent of the U.S. population—have some level of disability.
Though more than half (56 percent) of people aged 21 to 64
with some type of disability were employed in the past year,
the numbers lag far behind the non-disabled population’s
employment rate of 88 percent.
Below is some great information from SHRM on National Disability
Employment Awareness Month. The Seasonal Express Request
page below has over a dozen links to topics related to diversity
and disability, including Disability Mentoring Day and National
Disability Employment Awareness Month Posters for the workplace.
Check it out! http://www.dol.gov/odep/pubs/ndeam07.htm.
National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month
(NDEAM). The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP)
has the lead in planning NDEAM activities and materials to
increase the public's awareness of the contributions and
skills of American workers with disabilities. Various programs
carried out throughout the month also highlight the specific
employment barriers that still need to be addressed and removed.
To receive resources on this topic, please visit our Seasonal
Express Request page and select key term FALL: DISABILITY
AWARENESS MONTH/MENTORING DAY.

Volunteer
Management Committee |
Submitted
by Tami Murphy
To borrow a line from an ad that I am sure we all have
heard The Volunteer Management Committee (VMC) is looking
for a few good men and women! If you have wondered how
you can get more out of your membership with HRACI we are
the entry way for volunteering.
Being a volunteer is a great way to get involved. There
are a variety of committees in which you can use your own
interests and skills that fit you best. You can find a
description of all 11 committees by clicking on the “Volunteer” tab
near the top of the home page for HRACI. You will also
find an online volunteer form to complete.
Don’t let the thought of “I’d like to
volunteer but I don’t have the time” keep you
from sticking your toe in the water and getting involved.
Although there is a one year commitment most committees
meet one time a month for an hour or two. If you are not
sure which of the 11 committees might be best for you contact
the VMC and we will be happy to help you.
For 2009, the Volunteer Management Committee Strategic
Plan will focus on three areas. One area is to improve
the overall branding of HRACI to not only our current membership
but to the Human Resource community as a whole. HRACI is
a vibrant organization with over 1100 talented professionals.
This is a message that we want to broadcast to the HR community.
Because we have such an active membership the organization
wants to be known as the preeminent “Credible Authority” for
the Human Resource profession.
The third piece of our 2009 Strategic Plan centers on the
importance of increasing Diversity within the organization
and community. We want to broaden the members of HRACI’s
awareness within diversity. We look forward to working
with all volunteers, new and veterans, to make great things
happen in 2009!

Legislative
Update – ADA
Amendments Act of 2008 |
Submitted
by James D. Masur II
As you may have heard amidst all of the clutter of the
Stock market detritus, and campaign blather, yesterday
President Bush signed the ADA Restoration Act, a/k/a the
ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA, in government acronym-speak).
Some of the highlights include:
-
Repeal of Sutton v. UAL's
core rulings
-
Removal
of language saying those with disabilities are a minority,
and defining disability in a vast, all-encompassing
way, that could apply ADA protections to many,
many previously
uncovered
individuals.
an Effective date of January 1, 2009
-
The ADAAA militates in favor of employers
taking a new approach to things like reasonable
accommodations, in
order to manage the new risks imposed by
the new law.
