What’s Your “Strategic Plan”?
Each year around this time, most organizations
review last year's strategic plan and forecast
into the next year. They are reviewing:
-
What
was accomplished toward their current plan
-
Where
gaps exist in making progress on the current
plan
-
What
new strategies/changes in business have
emerged which now
need to be addressed
and added
to next year's plan
We
all participate in these periodic strategic reviews
for our
companies, our volunteer organizations,
our neighborhood associations
and even potentially our
own
households.
However, I would like to
ask...when was the last time
you reviewed your personal
strategic career plan? It should
contain
the same elements as those
for your
organization, including:
Where are you today? In what areas
do you want to accomplish
more?
And what has changed that
you need to
react to and potentially
add to next year's plan?
Let’s start with graduation,
as we all did. At this point
in our career, we ask the
questions: What skills do
I have? What profession
do I want to practice within?
And where are the opportunities?
This process evolves into
budget
(what do I need to make,
how much can I spend, etc.),
geographic parameters (where
do I want
to live, where can I afford
to live), and potentially
additional knowledge/skills
to close a gap between what
I have to offer and what
employers are looking
for.
During mid-career, the analysis/decisions
are very different. I am
now established: What
skills have I gained? Where
am I practicing my craft?
What gaps exist in what I
am
doing? And what additional
education/skills might I
need to
close that gap or move toward
the
next goal? The budget
questions for this stage
are around salary, performance
bonus
goals,
and retirement planning.
Late in the career path, questions may evolve to:
Is a second career in order (usually aligned with
achievement of mid-career goals)? What does retirement
look like based on the planning done along the way
and changes due to markets and goal realization?
Often we think ‘I’ll start planning
next year once I get through this one’.
Or we are suddenly faced
with a change and we learn
that it is too late to start
proactively
planning, as we are thrown
into reaction-mode and the
changes made are for survival
reasons.
We could all take a personal
lesson from the well-executed
strategies
of our companies,
volunteer organizations,
etc., that we have been part
of.
We need to take the simple
step of converting the questions
that
are
asked of our businesses
and ask them of ourselves
to begin solidly planning
for the
future,
both for the short
term and long.

Membership Renewal Time! |
This
month starts our renewal drive for 2010. Remember,
your renewal is only $90 for a year full of exciting
programs and opportunities in 2010.
Along with renewals, we will continue to reward IndySHRM members who refer
others who join IndySHRM. For your first referral you will immediately
receive a $5 Starbucks card. Referrals will be tracked through December
of 2010 and a monetary reward will be given at the end of the year for
your total referrals. The reward increases in value for each referral you
get. Your first referral will be $10, the second $15, the third $25, the
fourth $30 and the fifth will receive a $50 gift card. Any referrals beyond
5 will be rewarded with an additional $5 for each referral. So someone
who refers 5 members to join IndySHRM could come away with a total of $130.
These will be MasterCard or Visa cards so you can use them anywhere! We
hope everyone will be motivated to share with non-members the benefits
that IndySHRM offers. And be sure the joining members note your name as
the referrer on their membership application.

Conference
Hortense White, member of the IndySHRM Diversity
Committee, will be representing IndySHRM
at the Annual SHRM Diversity Conference and
Exposition, in San Diego, CA, October. 19-21,
2009.
SHRM's Diversity Conference is the premier
forum for diversity thought leaders to exchange
new ideas, discuss current challenges and
expand their networks. Topics include reintegrating
veterans with disabilities, leveraging a
multigenerational workforce, unconscious
bias, and minority executive development.
Look for an update in the November Newsletter
to hear about Hortense's trip!
IndySHRM Diversity Committee offers FREE
resume review and advice to Job Seekers
At the third Diversity Career Fair September
16, 2009, Diversity Committee members assisted
fellow diversity candidates in achieving
their next job. CareerBuilder and the Indianapolis
Star hosted the event at the Indiana Convention
Center.
“HR professionals offering on-the-spot
resume review to job seekers is a huge benefit,
especially because it’s free,” said
Erin Brothers, Director of Diversity for
IndySHRM. “Candidates are surprised
to hear what we do, that we are a resource
for them and that we are truly there to help
them out during their transition,” Brothers
said. “And (almost) all of them are
happy to have feedback, especially knowing
it is coming from an HR professional who
sees hundreds of resumes on a daily basis.”
Over thirty job seekers came to the IndySHRM
booth, inquiring about our organization,
diversity committee and the free resume service
we were providing. Our committee has reviewed
over 100 resumes in the three Diversity Career
Fairs offered by CareerBuilder and the Indianapolis
Star this year.

IndySHRM Member Testimonials
The following testimonials provide insight into
the benefits of an IndySHRM membership.
Holly Larson joined
IndySHRM in 2009 in order to participate
in the PHR certification program.
She is currently Director of Career Services
at TechSkills. Upon deciding to take
the PHR exam, she thought becoming a
member would be
a great way to network and receive insight
from other HR professionals. The benefits
she sees
to being a member of IndySHRM are meeting
new people, as well as providing avenues
to keep
up with changes and new developments
in the HR field. Holly sees a long-term
benefit in receiving
acknowledgment from being affiliated
with a professional organization that
carries credibility and substance.
She thinks a successful membership lies
in participation, motivation, and time
to devote to making it a
meaningful membership.
Caryn Sarvich has been
a member since 1999 and her interest
in membership stemmed from moving
into an HR position and wanting to find
mentors and an opportunity to network
with other leaders
in the field. Her participation has been
extremely rewarding through attending
monthly meetings,
special events and networking opportunities.
She has benefitted from the educational
resources provided at many of the monthly
meetings as well
as receiving recertification credits.
Sharing experiences, ideas and best practices
with
experienced friends and colleagues has
led to some great
insights and innovation. She encourages
members to use their membership consistently
by attending
monthly meetings and sitting with people
you don’t know to develop connections.
She also says to invite other HR professionals
and
encourage them to join IndySHRM. Caryn
loves attending the Indiana and National
SHRM conferences
and feels very proud and fortunate to be
a part of such a great group of HR professionals.

The
New Deal: Successful Rewards Programs in a
Changed Business Environment
The “old” social
contract between employers and employees has
been mangled, and it is unclear what form the
new deal will take. In this unprecedented and
uncertain economic environment, where rules
of the road are still being defined, employers
are grappling with conflicting priorities for
managing costs, improving productivity, and
building on their organizations’ talent
bases.
Mercer
will facilitate a discussion focused on creating
the new deal, with a focus on total rewards
programs. The conversation will look at the
issues from multiple perspectives, including
costs, competitiveness, program designs, and
employee considerations. Pieces of the rewards
program that will be covered include compensation,
health and welfare benefits, defined benefit
and defined contribution retirement benefits,
and engagement through communications. We will
draw on survey data, case studies, anecdotal
information, and the experiences and observations
of participants in the program.
Our
objectives are to:
- Provide
participants with the latest trends, data
and thinking related to total rewards — including
compensation, defined benefit and defined
compensation plans, health benefits, and
employee engagement.
- Facilitate
discussion among participants allowing
them to share their experiences and learn
from each other.
- Share
Mercer’s experiences with our clients,
including their preparation for 2010 under
The New Deal.
- Provide
data from Mercer’s robust survey
group, which has published numerous surveys
related to human capital and benefits monitoring
changes throughout the recession.
About
Rick:
Rick is in demand as a speaker on human capital topics, and has been published
in a variety of periodicals. He has conducted programs for the American Management
Association, The Conference Board, IABC, the International Foundation of Employee
Benefit Plans, and the Executive MBA Programs at the University of Southern
California, and at the Walton School of Business at the University of Arkansas,
among others.
He
serves on the Boards of ideastream (parent
of Cleveland's public radio and television
stations), and the Cleveland Play House, where
he is a vice president and member of the Executive
Committee. He was a founding Board member of
